The news follows the recent controversial announcement of HBO\u2019s upcoming drama series\u00a0<em>Confederate<\/em>, which will explore slavery being a legal and modern day institution. Although both series are tackling an alternate timeline,\u00a0<em>Black America<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Confederate<\/em>\u00a0will take rather distinctive approaches.<\/p>\n<p><em>Black America<\/em>\u00a0hails from top feature producer Will Packer and Award-winning\u00a0<em>The Boondocks<\/em>\u00a0creator Aaron McGruder. Set in the present day, the series will envision a sovereign nation called New Colonia, formed by freed slaves. After two decades of peace with the United States and exceptional growth, New Colonia has joined the status of major industrialized nations, all while America falls into a hurried decline.<\/p>\n<p>The series has been in development since early February, first reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2017\/02\/amazon-buys-alternate-universe-drama-the-boondocks-creator-aaron-mcgruder-will-packer-1201900107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadline<\/a>, but HBO\u2019s announcement of\u00a0<em>Confederate<\/em>\u00a0is what ultimately prompted the producers behind\u00a0<em>Black America<\/em>\u00a0to reveal the project in more detail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon is developing\u00a0Black America, an alternate history drama series where freed slaves have control over the South.
