{"id":6519,"date":"2021-09-06T15:34:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T15:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magazine.watchjaro.com\/?p=6519"},"modified":"2021-09-08T15:40:52","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T15:40:52","slug":"nia-dacostas-candyman-makes-history-as-first-no-1-film-directed-by-a-black-woman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magazine.watchjaro.com\/nia-dacostas-candyman-makes-history-as-first-no-1-film-directed-by-a-black-woman\/","title":{"rendered":"Nia DaCosta\u2019s \u2018Candyman\u2019 Makes History As First No. 1 Film Directed By A Black Woman"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.watchjaro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/candyman-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6520\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazine.watchjaro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/candyman-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/magazine.watchjaro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/candyman-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/magazine.watchjaro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/candyman-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/magazine.watchjaro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/candyman-390x220.png 390w, https:\/\/magazine.watchjaro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/candyman.png 1360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The new <\/strong><strong><em>Candyman<\/em><\/strong><strong>, directed by Nia DaCosta and produced by Jordan Peele, recently became the first number one film in the box office to be helmed by a Black woman.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DaCosta earning the No. 1 spot places her ahead of two Black women directors who came close to making history: Ava DuVeray\u2019s <\/strong><strong><em>Selma<\/em><\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><em>A Wrinkle in Time<\/em><\/strong><strong>, and Gina Prince-Bythewood\u2019s<\/strong><strong><em> Love and Basketball.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The horror film, which has already surpassed its financial projections during opening weekend, has performed much better than box office analysts expected considering its release in the midst of a pandemic.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cUniversal believed it would attract Black viewers with the pedigree of <\/strong><strong><em>Get Out<\/em><\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><em>Us<\/em><\/strong><strong>, and it did,\u201d said <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2021\/08\/candyman-box-office-nia-dacosta-jordan-peele-1234660610\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>IndieWire<\/strong><\/a><strong>. \u201cHowever, the appeal was more diverse: Per the studio\u2019s audience survey, 37 percent of the audience was Black, white was 30 percent, Latinos 22 percent, and Asians 5 percent. That spread was key to reaching the higher number.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Candyman<\/em><\/strong><strong> serves as a sequel to the original 1992 film directed by Bernard Rose, and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, and Vanessa Williams. The film\u2019s intrigue and anticipation can be attributed to Jordan Peele\u2019s name being attached, as the outstanding success of <\/strong><strong><em>Get Out <\/em><\/strong><strong>and <\/strong><strong><em>Us<\/em><\/strong><strong> broke barriers for Black horror filmmakers. The raving reviews, however, commend DaCosta\u2019s individual style and the strong execution of the risk-taking film.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Previously, 31-year-old DaCosta earned the Nora Ephron Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival for her debut crime thriller feature film <em>Little Woods<\/em>. Now, she\u2019s serving as the director for <em>The Marvels<\/em> (2022) in perhaps her most monumental project yet.
