The cast and director of HBO\u2019s <\/b>A Black Lady Sketch Show<\/i><\/b> recently joined Variety\u2019s Streaming Room to speak on the show\u2019s historical impact, guest stars, and future plans.\u00a0 Robin Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, Ashley Nicole Black, Quinta Brunson, director Dime Davis and guest star Angela Bassett all tuned in for the virtual Q&A.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Thede, who created the show, also serves as the executive producer and a main character. \u201cWhen I was creating \u2018A Black Lady Sketch Show,\u2019 I wanted to make a narrative sketch series where Black women could live grounded experiences in a magical reality,\u201d said Thede. \u201cSo for us it was a playground where we could create these sketches, and live these three dimensional characters, and tell these stories that could recur throughout the season and throughout the series.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Being the first show to have a writer\u2019s room consisting of all Black women, the historical significance is evident. What makes <\/b>A Black Lady Sketch Show<\/i><\/b> even more unparalleled is how each writer brings different past experiences and their own unique identities to the table. Therefore, the characters we watch come alive in the show also have differing personalities and subtleties.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Davis, the show\u2019s director, highlighted the importance of creating space for Black women to thrive in comedy. \u201cI really strive to tell stories about the women I knew growing up \u2026 and I\u2019m always trying to say like, \u201cYou\u2019re important. You\u2019re beautiful. You\u2019re amazing,\u201d Davis said. \u201cBut with this I also got to say \u201cYou\u2019re funny.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

And with the entire cast being Black women, there\u2019s no room for the problematic \u201ctoken Black girl.\u201d\u00a0 Cast member Gabrielle Dennis spoke about how refreshing and rewarding this is. \u201cI\u2019ve been on another sketch series but as the one singular Black girl,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd you\u2019re vying for that opportunity, you\u2019re vying for that moment, but here the moments just keep coming. There are no moments that aren\u2019t beautiful and that you can\u2019t just dive into.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

The second season was written before the pandemic, but production is undoubtedly delayed. The script is surprisingly predictive and has apocalyptic undertones, so there\u2019s no need to modify it to keep up with the times. \u201cSeason 2 is going to be bigger and better. It\u2019s our sophomore album so we gotta come back strong,\u201d Thede said. \u201cAnd we already predicted this whole quarantine situation so that storyline will continue and still be relevant.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n
