\u201cGenesis Begins Again\u201d by Alicia D. Williams has been announced as one of the five finalists competing for the William C. Morris literary award. In October, JARO had the pleasure of speaking with Williams about her debut novel through our <\/b>podcast<\/b><\/a> offering, where she touched on her early writing process and the book\u2019s crucial message about colorism.<\/b><\/p>\n

The annual award, instituted in 2009, spotlights young adult literature written by a first-time author. Ben Phillippe\u2019s \u201cThe Field Guide to the North American Teenager,\u201d David Yoon\u2019s \u201cFrankly in Love,\u201d Nafiza Azad\u2019s \u201cThe Candle and the Flame,\u201d and Katy Rose Pool\u2019s \u201cThere Will Come a Darkness\u201d are the other esteemed nominees.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

In a statement, awards committee chair Terry Young noted that \u201cthe selected finalists will captivate and enthrall readers all the way through with a diversity of characters that readers will want to connect with.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
