I think too often we\u2019re so busy taking care of other people that we aren\u2019t always paying attention to what\u2019s going on with us,\u201d she said. \u201cI wanted a platform that helped sisters put the focus back on themselves.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As an online platform, Therapy for Black Girls allows for Dr. Bradford to meet people exactly where they are, regardless of their location.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Atlanta-based psychologist is the founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/808875152620942\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thrive Tribe<\/a>, a popular Facebook group with nearly 13,000 members, which has now expanded into a well-known podcast with listeners around the world. In addition, Dr. Bradford has recently formed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapyforblackgirls.com\/therapist-directory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">therapist directory<\/a>, featuring over 700 therapists of color across the nation. Dr. Bradford finds that in the black community, boundaries tend to be overlooked. \u201cI think far too many of us don\u2019t say NO enough,\u201d she said. \u201cNo to that extra task at work, no to that friend who never shows up for us, no to that ex who keeps trying to come back into our lives, etc. I don\u2019t think we always realize the cumulative impact that taking on other people\u2019s stuff can have on our mental health.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Furthermore, she urges people to avoid clich\u00e9 phrases when speaking to a loved one that is depressed, such as \u201cjust pray about it,\u201d and \u201clife is hard for everyone, toughen up.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhile people may be well-intentioned when trying to help a loved one, these sentiments typically only make people feel like you don\u2019t understand them and that you\u2019re not someone they can go to in the future,<i>\u201d <\/i>Dr. Bradford explained.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To reduce the mental health stigma, Dr. Bradford says that black women should share more openly about their struggles and experiences, while also being mindful of the language that is used in order to ensure that stigmatizing phrases such as \u201che\/she is so crazy\u201d are no longer used.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn more about Therapy for Black Girls or find a therapist near you by visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapyforblackgirls.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.therapyforblackgirls.com<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the black community, therapy often has a negative stigma attached to it, which is based on the misconstrued assumption that only \u201ccrazy\u201d people require therapy, or that it should be reserved for the weak-minded.
